Never had a fishing day that wasn’t fun

ShareI find it amusing that the folks who constantly complain about restrictions on fishing all have the same argument. “It takes the fun out of everything” to quote Ken Elfrink of Robertsville.
I have been fishing for 30 years now and I have never had a day that wasn’t fun. I have been caught in some [...]

Bowhunter education is a good idea, even for the best archers

ShareEver since I started bowhunting a few years ago, I’ve researched everything I could about techniques, skills and equipment. Not satisfied with reading dozens of books and magazines, I looked around for bowhunter education classes but found them rare compared to all the other outdoors education opportunities available.
So when I noticed that the Missouri Department [...]

Antlerless deer season changes hard on muzzle loading hunters, says “redneck from Park Hills”

ShareDear Emery,
I would like to comment on the specific change of moving the antlerless portion around to replace the portion of the muzzle loading season. I don’t understand completely what the switch of these two portions of the deer season accomplish?
For years now the MDC has tried to gear the season toward the [...]

Traveler Editorial View: What kind of “world class” do we want?

ShareA few issues back, Traveler raised the question in this space of whether the Missouri Department of Conservation is doing enough to improve smallmouth bass fishing in the state. What prompted the question was an MDC White Paper recommending eight new stream stretches totaling 249.3 miles for new [...]

Who needs “world class” smallmouth?

ShareBy Bob Todd

I was trying to come to terms with the words, “world class smallmouth.” So went to Wilson Dam in Alabama, which advertises itself as the world capital of smallmouth bass.
Indeed, the claim may be well-founded. I photographed a 5-1 and a 4-14 in a 24 hour period. The 4-14 was taken by my [...]

Conservation commission to consider adding one natural area, delisting two others

ShareIn its meeting on Dec. 17, 18, the Missouri Conservation Commission will consider a recommendation on dates for 2010 turkey season, consider bids on the Roaring River hatchery improvement project  and consider recommendations to designate one new Missouri Natural Area at Twenty-Five Mile Prairie Natural Area in Polk County, and delist two Missouri Natural Areas [...]

Connect your kid with nature

ShareIf you’re looking for a way to get your kids connected with nature, we think you should read them an article from Traveler before they go to sleep each night. You should also take them hunting, hiking, camping and fishing. It’s a good idea, from time to time, to yank the tv cord out [...]

Opening weekend deer kill down

ShareSteady rainfall that soaked much of Missouri on Sunday contributed to a drop in the number of deer taken during the opening weekend of the November deer season.
Hunters checked 86,202 deer during the first weekend of the November Portion of Firearms Deer Season, Nov. 14 through 24. That is 12 percent fewer than last year.
