Kudos from our readers

Traveler got two letters this week accompanying renewals which were particularly gratifying, and we thought we would share:
Raymond Weiler of Perryville wrote:
“Well, another year gone. I am 92 years old. I think this is about 40 years that I have been doing this. I sure do enjoy it. The first one I read [...]

Deer management on the minds of West St. Louis County cities…

As Labor Day nears, West St. Louis County’s incorporated cities’ thoughts turn to deer.
Town and Country, once again has the conflict between deer overpopulation and management methods on its city council agenda. For those of you who like the story behind the story, (how to reduce a population of 66 deer per [...]

The case of the missing squirrels — solved!

Traveler readers are nothing if not observant, so we weren’t too surprised when Neal Mansfield of Dudley in Stoddard County called, wondering about his missing squirrels.
By Jo Schaper
“I’ve been noticing there haven’t been many squirrels around this year,” Mansfield said. “They’re not even eating my corn. Can you find out what’s going on?”
Mr. Mansfield [...]

Comprehensive article on jon (or is it john) boats?

Hootentown is a small settlement just to the southwest of Nixa, which is a Christian County suburb of Springfield. It’s most known for a huge stone arch on private land, and is also home to an MDC James River access
On of the downsides of the Internet is sometimes it’s hard to find who is [...]

Never had a fishing day that wasn’t fun

I find it amusing that the folks who constantly complain about restrictions on fishing all have the same argument. “It takes the fun out of everything” to quote Ken Elfrink of Robertsville.
I have been fishing for 30 years now and I have never had a day that wasn’t fun. I have been caught in some [...]

Blanket cave closures alienate agencies’ best ally in saving bats

I am sending this letter to news organizations and publications that have covered WNS (white nose syndrome, a newly identified fungal and fatal bat disease) in the hopes of presenting a different perspective. I have seen a lot of misinformation going around, especially the statements that humans are a known or probable vector for WNS, [...]

Wakonda, Hunnewell water quality ‘going to hell’

The E-Coli is getting deep at Wakonda State Park. I found an article you wrote last year about the lakes. I’ve heard of it all my life and it used to be “The Place” where people went camping for a week or so. Now all I hear of it is the [...]

Riverways access now far greater than if property had remained under private ownership

I’ve followed the current issue with road closures in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and would like to put in my thoughts on the matter.
Although I live a couple hours away from the Current and Jacks Fork, I’ve spent quite a bit of time on these wonderful rivers over the years and have seen the [...]

Todd responds: Smallmouth have become ’sacred cow’

Sounds to me like the increases in bass are largely the result of running a whole bunch of fishermen off. And attracting fishermen who never keep anything anyway.

Kids would get excited about catching more, larger fish

I would also like to take issue with Mr. Rudroff’s comments in your July issue. He said, “I just want to take kids fishing, catch fish, and eat some of them.” Who could find fault with that? But then he said, “I don’t know a youngster around that would be excited about being able to fish ‘world class smallmouth bass streams’.” I’m certain he is correct about that; but he misses the whole point. — Norman Leppo
