The Nature Conservancy buys 175 acres of Current River frontage

Share The Nature Conservancy in Missouri announced the purchase Feb. 1 of 175 acres and nearly 1.5 miles of land along the Current River — the largest stretch of private frontage remaining in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.
The acreage is below Akers Ferry near Hartshorn. It was formerly the Nature’s Place Sanctuary.

Commission approves elk restoration

ShareThe Missouri Conservation Commission today approved an elk restoration plan that includes health protocols, herd management guidelines and habitat management recommendations. Releases of elk could begin as soon as early 2011.
The plan calls for releasing wild elk in a 346-square-mile (221,509 acres) elk restoration zone in parts of Shannon, Carter and Reynolds counties.
