Monday, May 6 RMEF volunteers and Missouri Department of conservation team members rolled out the red carpet, burlap that is for the arrival mid-May of the final installment of 35 elk from Kentucky. Our reward: a greeting by 21 of our current elk residents. CARTER COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will close the refuge portion of Peck Ranch Conservation Area to turkey hunting to permit the third stage of the Department’s elk restoration projectHunters who normally hunt on the area’s wildlife refuge portion will need to make alternate plans for the 2013 spring turkey season. Heat, drought and other factors contributing to recent elk deaths The most recent elk herd brought from Kentucky was split into two groups: the first of 33 was released on Peck Ranch. An additional 14 elk were released on part of The Nature Conservancy’s Lower Ozarks tract on June 21.
